Identity & stewardship

Avocado Miki (Persea americana) is a locally selected variety from Depok, developed by IPB’s Tropical Horticulture Center, even though avocados in general originate from Central America. The fruit weighs about 0.4–0.6 kg, oval-shaped with smooth shiny green skin, and has buttery yellow flesh that is thick, soft, and fiberless. Its taste is creamy, sweet-savory, and without bitterness.

The key advantages of Avocado Miki include early bearing (fruiting within 1–3 years compared to >5 years for common avocados), pest resistance (leaves are unattractive to caterpillars, reducing pesticide use), and compact growth (semi-dwarf tree suitable for small yards or pots). Productivity is high, with 100–150 fruits per tree per season, and it carries strong economic value in local markets.

From a sustainability perspective, Miki cultivation also offers nature-based credit potential. Each tree can sequester around 20–30 kg CO₂ annually, translating to 2–3 tons CO₂ per hectare per year, and up to 5–7 tons CO₂ per hectare when integrated into agroforestry systems. With voluntary carbon market prices ranging USD 5–15 per ton CO₂e, one hectare of Miki agroforestry could generate USD 25–105 annually in carbon credit value, complementing fruit sales and creating a dual revenue stream.

This makes Avocado Miki not only a premium fruit variety but also a nature-based asset that blends economic, ecological, and climate benefits.
