Identity & stewardship

Avocado Aligator (Persea americana)** is a jumbo variety originally from Mexico, now widely cultivated in Indonesia. The fruit is exceptionally large, weighing about 1–2.5 kg, elongated in shape resembling an alligator’s snout, with thick, rough, wrinkled skin that turns from dark green to purplish-brown when ripe. Its flesh is golden yellow, creamy, fiberless, and richly flavored with a sweet-savory taste. The seed is relatively small, giving a higher proportion of edible flesh.

The key advantages of Avocado Aligator include early bearing (fruiting within 2–3 years from grafted seedlings), high market value due to its unique jumbo size, and strong adaptability to mid–highland conditions. Productivity is high, with dozens to hundreds of fruits per tree per season, and the variety is resilient against common pests. However, the trees can grow tall (up to 15 m), making them more suitable for large orchards than small yards.

From a sustainability perspective, Aligator cultivation also offers nature-based credit potential. Each large tree can sequester slightly more carbon than smaller varieties, averaging 25–35 kg CO₂ annually, which translates to 2.5–3.5 tons CO₂ per hectare per year, and up to 6–8 tons CO₂ per hectare in diversified agroforestry systems. With voluntary carbon market prices ranging USD 5–15 per ton CO₂e, one hectare of Aligator agroforestry could generate USD 30–120 annually in carbon credit value, complementing fruit sales and enhancing long-term orchard economics.

This makes Avocado Aligator not only a premium jumbo fruit variety but also a nature-based asset that combines economic profitability, ecological resilience, and climate benefits.
